Current Solar Data Tips on Viewing the Aurora - Being able to see the Aurora depends mainly on two factors, geomagnetic activity (the degree of disturbance of the earth's magnetic field at the time) and your geographic location. Further considerations are the weather at your location, and light pollution from city lights, full moon and so forth. Auroral Activity Extrapolated from NOAA POES - The plots on this page show the current extent and position of the auroral oval at each pole, extrapolated from measurements taken during the most recent polar pass of the NOAA POES satellite. "Center time" is the calculated time halfway through the satellite's pass over the pole. JHU/APL's Auroral Particles and Imagery Page - Available DMSP Particle Data Products, which include spectrograms, dayside and nightside crossing identifications, auroral ovals plots, geomagnetic contour plots, Arc probability maps, DMSP satellite tracking plots, data files, and some source code. How the Auroral Activity Patterns are Created - These measurements are made continually as the satellite passes over the polar aurora regions twice each orbit. Since 1978, observations from almost 300,000 transits over the auroral regions have been gathered under a variety of auroral activity conditions ranging from very quiet to extremely active.
Aurora - "Aurora may well have been the source of Chinese dragon legends. The twisting snake-like forms of active auroral bands are often portrayed as celestial 'serpents' in ancient chronicles. European dragon legends, too, may have their origin in auroral activity. How ironic that the English patron saint (St George) is now thought by many researchers to have had his legendary battle with that most Scottish of phenomena, the aurora, rather than a dragon!" STORM Time Empirical Ionospheric Correction Model Severe Geomagnetic Storm Intervals in History And Future Prospects - As we proceed through the decline of the current solar cycle, a popular opinion seems to have arisen with the media and others that geomagnetic activity and auroral activity will begin to subside ever increasingly (if not halt altogether). We present the plot above in order to bring some truth to this myth. Solar Minimum Explodes
