America’s Rails: Past and Future
Coordinator: Martha Rassmussen
Mondays 9:00–10:30 AM
Eight weeks, September 14-November 2
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 65

Our Winter 2009 course “Our Fascination With Railroads” inspired the creation of this new course about America’s rails. This course will feature more information about Iowa and its role in the growth and development of railroads and offer the inspiration of music and art and movies to our appreciation of trains.

Rails Across and Into Iowa
Rails in Word, Song, and Movies

Richard Steffen, retired teacher from South Hamilton High School, who lives in Jewell, will lead two sessions. One will carry us through the history of how railroads came into and across Iowa. The other session will be a celebration and exploration of rails in song, word, and his favorite movies.

Train of Thought
Stewart Buck, an ISU graduate, is employed by Bondurant-Farrar Community School District where he has taught art classes for 34 years. He also has for 30 years maintained Streamliner Studio, a freelance art business (stewartbuck.com). His art & photography have won numerous awards in exhibition throughout the Midwest. Buck works with pastels creating drawings with railroad themes and will talk about how he became interested in trains and how it led to his career as a railroad artist.

Kate Shelley Bridge
Dana Grefe is associate editor of North Western Lines Magazine, the official publication of the Chicago & North Western Historical Society. Dana has been photographing and studying the Kate Shelley Bridge for many years and has permission to observe “up close and personal” the new bridge being constructed for our 21st century “fast” trains across the Des Moines River. He will talk about the role of the Kate Shelley Bridge in Iowa railroad history and the effect of the new unnamed bridge on Iowa’s future.

Rails to Trails
Peggy Baer retired in 2008 as head of the Office of Rails at the Iowa Department of Transportation and will combine forces with Lisa Hein, director of programming and planning for the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, to talk about the development of railroad rights-of-way to create bike and nature trails across
our beautiful state of Iowa.

Passenger Rail Future in Iowa and the Midwest
Tammy Nicholson, head of the Office of Rails for the Iowa Department of Transportation, and Amanda Martin, specialist in Iowa passenger rail transportation, will talk about what are our chances and choices for future rail transportation here in Iowa and the Midwest.

Locomotive Engineer/Train Operations
Janet L. Schultz, locomotive engineer for Union Pacific, will field your questions about the role and duties of locomotive engineers and train operations in Iowa and the Midwest.

European Passenger Travel
Cliff Cessna is a senior in civil engineering at Iowa State and is president of the Iowa State Railroad Club. Cliff will draw upon his experiences to explain the European passenger rail system and how it differs from American train travel.

*Are you interested in trains and the railroads?
As an extension to this course, we are offering an overnight trip. Any OLLI at ISU member can travel on the trip even if you do not take the course. At the end of the catalog, course # 27, is an itinerary for the trip to Council Bluffs and Omaha to visit three different museums.

Changing Patterns of Energy
Coordinator/Instructor: Rollie Struss
Mondays 11:00 AM–12:30 PM
Eight weeks, September 14-November 2
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 65

This course will cover a long span of the energy supplies and demands. The focus will be on the fossil fuel era of about 150 years, which we are now enjoying. The rapidly increasing world population, the improvements in the standard of living, the rapid increase of technology, and the use of the other natural resources all impact the energy supplies available to meet the demand.

Were the good old days really that good?
The early history of energy use precedes the fossil fuel era. The lifestyles and labor inputs will be reviewed to show what advances have been realized since the discovery of “stored” energy fuels. The discovery of new energy supplies fueled the demands without concern of the future impacts.

Saved by big oil?
The fossil fuel era opened new boundaries for improvements in all areas. The Industrial Revolution created large changes and improvements in all facets of our lives. The changes in lifestyles, rapid increases in population, creation of wealth, and new distribution channels were all impacted by the abundance of energy supplies.

What, me worry? We’ll never run out of oil!
The discovery of fossil fuels in the late 19th century led to major changes in the early 20th century. Increasing discoveries of fuel reserves led to exploding developments in all areas, with no consideration of the consequences. Rapid increases in demand could be easily met and the fossils fuels were consumed at
ever increasing rates. The fact that these reserves were finite was not considered until the latter part of the 20th century. Now projections show the reserves will be used up in 100 years.

Will nuclear power make a comeback?
All of the principal supplies of energy come from hydrocarbons, which emit carbon dioxide. This has affected the atmosphere more than anything from the past. Increased demand for electric energy is rising faster than other forms of energy. The electric grid that distributes power to the large population centers cannot carry the load without upgrades, or disruption will result. New energy supplies are not available to match the loads where energy demand is the highest. Nuclear power is becoming a candidate for base load electric generation.

Atmospheric changes
Dr. Gene Takle, ISU professor Geological and Atmospheric Sciences and Agronomy
Pollution of the atmosphere by carbon dioxide and other contaminants is having a measurable effect on the earth’s atmosphere. The changes from solar cycles, pollution, and releases of other toxic material into the atmosphere are compared to what has occurred before.

Solar – the only input?
Keith Kutz, ISU Energy Center, Solar Specialist
The only net energy input the earth receives is from solar irradiation. Solar radiation produces the winds, the rain which leads to hydropower, and the direct radiation can be converted to energy by photo cells or through photosynthesis. Limitations of solar power will also be reviewed.

Can biomass replace the liquid fuels?
Dr. Robert Brown, ISU Mechanical Engineering Dept., director of the Center for Sustainable Environment
Replacement of the liquid fossil fuels by production of fuel from biomass will be discussed. The opportunities and limitations of the replacement fuels will be the focus of these discussions.

What will the future hold?
Dr. Dennis Keeney, former director of Leopold Center
The depletion of the energy resources, the increasing population, the burning of the rain forests, the overuse of water, the increased demand for food, and all other changes will combine to make a huge impact on our lifestyles. What does the future hold for our future generations? Will they be able to adapt to the changes? What can be done now to prepare for the changes?

Rollie Struss was deputy director for operations of the Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University before retiring. He is past chair of the board when OLLI at ISU was known as College for Seniors and has previously organized and taught a course on energy.

Listening to Music: Beyond the Sound
Instructor: Homer Gartz
Mondays 1:00–2:30 PM
Eight weeks, September 14-November 2
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 65

How do you listen to music, and why do you like or dislike a particular piece? The goals of this course are to improve appreciation and understanding of music through guided listening and to provide pleasure and challenge for listeners at every level of musical experience. Class procedure will include lecture, structured listening to a vast array of music (that of Mozart, Brahms, Wagner, Shostakovich, Copland, Stravinsky, Dvorak, Holst, plus Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and Miles Davis to name a few), and discussion of reactions and preferences. CDs will be primarily classical music with some piano and jazz, along with a sampling of numerous other genres. Assignments for enriched listening will be available each week. Someone said, “Music is what feelings sound like.”

Homer Gartz was director of Ames Public Schools Band (41 years) and Ames Municipal Band (26 years). His undergraduate and graduate studies, with an emphasis on education and performance (trombone and piano) were done at the University of Northern Iowa, Drake, and the University of Iowa. U.S. and Rising Powers
Since the end of the cold war, the U.S. has emerged as the world’s predominant power. However, in the 21st century some rapidly developing countries have become increasingly influential. Who are these “rising powers?” Will their emergence change the global balance of power? How will the U.S. react?

Afghanistan/Pakistan
Newfound hopes for stability in Iraq have shifted the U.S. military focus back to Afghanistan and Pakistan, one of the most volatile border regions in the world. What impact will this renewed interest have on the two states as well as on U.S. defense strategy?

Energy and the Global Economy
Rising energy prices, driven by instability in key producing regions such as the Middle East and increasing demand from developing countries, are affecting the global economy. What are the potential consequences of huge wealth transfers to oil-exporting states? Are there any realistic alternative energy scenarios on the horizon?

The Arctic
Rising global temperatures have created new opportunities in the Arctic for resource extraction and inter-continental transport. How will sovereignty disputes among the five countries that border the Arctic affect its potential development? What impact will this race for the Arctic have on an environment already in serious flux?

Egypt in the 21st Century
Egypt has long played an important role in the Arab world while maintaining a strategic relationship with the U.S. With elections scheduled for 2009, how will Egypt deal with serious domestic issues, ranging from Islamic radicalism to food shortages? What factors will influence the path of this regional heavyweight?

Global Food Supply
Global prices for food staples have risen dramatically, resulting in protests and unrest around the world. What factors are driving prices up, and can they be tamed? What will the political fallout be for governments that fail to act, and what role can global institutions play?

Cuba after Castro
Since Fidel Castro handed over the presidency of Cuba to his brother Raúl in early 2008, signs of greater economic openness have led to much speculation. Will Raúl seek to reopen ties with the U.S.? What role will Cuba’s American exiles play in shaping a post-Castro Cuba?

Universal Human Rights
As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights celebrates its 60th anniversary, events in the Balkans, Sudan, and Myanmar continue to challenge its idealism, while raising new questions about the prospects for humanitarian interventions. Do human rights transcend national borders and customs? Is the definition of human rights changing?

George Beran retired from Iowa State as a distinguished professor emeritus, veterinary microbiology and preventive medicine, specializing in public health. Jan Beran is a retired professor of physical education from ISU. They have done extensive travel throughout the world.

Tuesdays 1:00-2:30 PM
Six weeks, September 15-October 20
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 35

What an opportunity to learn more about the enchanting era of operettas! You likely will become nostalgic when you hear the music played. It has its own captivating and unique style. Ah, Vienna! Ah, Gilbert and Sullivan! Ah, Victor Herbert! Let us help you to relive this delightful music and simple theme of love lost and renewed by these composers. This music was quite popular during the 19th century and continues to be widely performed by amateur and professional groups in English-speaking countries.

Gypsy Baron
Alfred Kracher is a native of Vienna, Austria. He grew up there and very much enjoyed the Vienna Opera. He attended opera performances while the company was still in temporary quarters before World War II damage to the “big house” was repaired. He has given guest presentations in music classes at ISU and Opera Guild Chapters in Ames and Indianola.

Gilbert and Sullivan
Marion Lorr, known as Duffie, is an aficionado of Gilbert and Sullivan, performming their plays as a child. The performances of the D’oyly Carte Company that she attended in Baltimore gave her a life-long love of such operettas as H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, and Yeoman of the Guard.

Porgy and Bess
Shirley Shaw is an avid theatre person. She enjoys being in the audience or being part of the show. Shirley is delighted with operettas and has decided on one of the best, Porgy and Bess. She has had parts in several ACTORS productions and has also previously presented a class for OLLI at ISU.

El Capitan
Michael Golemo is the chair of the Music Department, director of bands and a professor of music at Iowa State University. He is an active guest conductor, the director of the Ames Municipal Band, and was elected to membership in the prestigious American Bandmasters Association.

Life in the Thirties
Instructor: Jorgen Rasmussen
Wednesdays 11:00 AM–12:30 PM
Eight weeks, September 16-November 4
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class Limit 45

Mention the 1930s and people think of the Great Depression. (Was canned salmon really so inexpensive that we ate salmon patties at least once each week?) But the 1930s were more than economic problems. This survey examines various aspects of life during that decade to provide a comprehensive portrait of that era.

  • The Economy: How bad was it? How long did it last? Did FDR get us out of the Depression?
  • Domestic Politics. As Maine goes so goes the nation? No, only Vermont. FDR fights with the nine old men. Huey Long wants to make every man a king.
  • International Affairs. Hitler invades…[too many to mention]. Japan invades…Italy invades…
  • The Movies. Why did seeing Fred and Ginger dancing in evening attire cheer people up rather than making them depressed and envious? Gone with the Wind. The Wizard of Oz. Snow White.
  • The Music. Boy, the way that Glenn Miller played… not to mention Benny. The Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter. “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?”
  • Sports. The Cubs were a powerhouse. No kidding. They won three pennants. A dying Lou Gehrig called himself “the luckiest man on the face of earth.” Jesse Owens showed Hitler who was the master race.
  • Literature. Hemingway, Steinbeck, Dos Passos, Isherwood.
  • Radio. Remember waiting for Fibber to open that closet door? Why was Orson Welles able to scare so many people about a Martian invasion? Can you hear the William Tell Overture without thinking: “Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse Silver…”

These and many other events that you’ve forgotten that you remember brought to life again with recordings and visuals.

Jorgen Rasmussen is a distinguished professor emeritus in Political Science at Iowa State University. While at ISU, he specialized in British politics and constitutional law. He has taught several OLLI at ISU courses on popular music and politics.

We are partners with livestock in our cultural evolution, which is at least two hundred times faster than biological evolution. At this first session a questionnaire will be shared.

Rwanda’s Gishwati Forest: A Forest of Hope or a Conservation Alamo for Chimpanzees?
Benjamin Beck, director of conservation, Great Ape Trust, specializes in animal cognition and primate conservation.
Neither Rowanda’s Gishwati Forest nor the chimpanzee population is sustainable without immediate protection. Dr. Beck, as Great Ape Trust manager of the Gishwati project, will cover the history, the present and future of the area, including information about the lives of chimpanzees.

Savana Chimps and Humans in Senegal: Cultures and Conflict
Jill Pruetz is an associate professor of anthropology, and primate behavior ecology at ISU.
Human cultural beliefs contribute to the conservation of chimpanzees in Senegal, but rapid changes in this country bring chimpanzees and humans into conflict today.

A Scientific Approach to Animal Welfare—What can we know about Animal Wants and Needs?
Suzanne Millma is an associate professor of animal welfare in the ISU college of Veterinary Medicine.
Animal welfare is of significant public interest, globally and within the USA. Laboratory techniques, scientific research, and study under field conditions can all help to determine animals needs and improve their quality of life, especially for animals kept for companionship, food, entertainment, and research.

Ethics and the Moral Standing of Animals
Clark Wolf is professor of philosophy and director of bioethics at ISU.
To have “legal standing” is to have a voice in court as someone whose interests and views must appropriately be taken into account as the court comes to a legal judgment. To have “moral standing” is to have interests or rights that must appropriately be taken into account as we make moral judgments. There is wide disagreement about just which individuals have moral standing: some people argue that human embryos and blastocysts have moral standing, while others argue that they do not. And many people argue that animals have standing, but different people have widely ranging views about just what this means or what it implies. This presentation will discuss different views about the moral status of animals, as well as some of the legal and practical implications of these views.

Animals in Our Stories, Dreams, and Religion
Larry Mitchell is a retired Presbyterian pastor
Animals play a large role in our conscious and unconscious life. We see that in everything from comics to holy books and images.

Wildlife and People: Is There a Wild Future?
Jim Pease is a retired extension wildlife specialist, emeritus associate professor in the Natural Resource Ecology Management Department at ISU.
We will explore historical and modern relationships between people and wildlife and recent research on these relationships. We will also discuss the importance of such relationships for the future of both wildlife and humans.

Reestablishing the Relationship Between Animals and People
Paul Lasley has been with ISU for 28 years. He is currently professor and chair of sociology and chair of anthropology.
Recent advances in science have established that the differences between humans and animals are not as simple and clear as it was once thought. Historically there were closer relationships and dependency between animals and humans, and it was only in the 20th century when this interaction was severed. Now it appears that something has been lost, and many are addressing why it is important to re-establish these relationships.

Iowa as the Early “Wild West”
Instructor: Susan Lucke
Wednesdays 3:00-4:30 PM
Four Weeks, September 16-October 7
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 55

From 1833 to 1860, Iowa was a keystone of the American West, a fact overlooked in most post-Civil War national history. This survey course explores Iowa as the early Far West frontier. It focuses on first Euro-American settlement in Iowa and uses the 1840 “Bellevue War”—complete with all the elements of a Western novel, but true!—as a case study of Iowa as the early “Wild West” and Iowa’s importance to the emerging United States. The four classes will cover:

  • Opening of the American Far West: The trans–Mississippi frontier
  • Early lifestyle
  • Good guys, bad guys; vigilantism and law
  • The Bellevue War and beyond: A territory matures

Susan Lucke is the author of “The Bellevue War: Mandate of Justice or Murder by Mob?” (2002), a book of Iowa history centered on settlement, organized crime, vigilantism, and law in early Iowa, along the Mississippi River. Research for the book spanned more than five years and involved many sources unseen and never assembled in more than 150 years. In addition to writing, Susan’s professional experience includes more than three decades working in academic publishing, including for ISU and ISU Press, and in education.

CLASS IN DES MOINES

Art: Visual Thinking—Inside Out
I
nstructor: Diana Darge
Thursdays 1:00-3:00 PM
Six weeks, September 17-October 22
The Lodge of Ashworth—West Des Moines
Class Limit: 15

This class will be offered at The Lodge of Ashworth, 909 Ashworth Rd., West Des Moines. This course is NOT restricted to residents of The Lodge of Ashworth; anyone interested may enroll.

Visual thinking is how your mind works with color and form. You will be introduced to various artists’ work, and will look at each painting example as it relates to color, form, and what we might know about the artist’s style. Come and play with color and line. Have fun with art and find your own thoughts speaking through guided experiences and art materials. The instructor will demonstrate—oil crayons (crapas) and markers. Supplies are included in the course fee.

Weekly hands-on experience:

  • Line, color, form, and motion in your work, along with demonstrations and experience with art mediums.
  • Building a drawing—this session will focus on looking at pictures, choosing something that “catches your eye.” From this you will build a drawing of your own by adding in your own thoughts.
  • Free Drawing—this session will focus on drawing from your own thoughts and experimenting with line and color.
  • Family—using color and shapes you will create your family’s portrait. You will also have the opportunity to think about the word Father and Mother and how you would show these words in color and shapes. You will construct an art piece with construction paper and glue.
  • Create a Mandala of Your Life—this is a circular drawing that will be 24” in diameter when finished. The word “mandala” is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit and loosely translated means “circle”
  • Create a Road Map of your Life—this will be done in abstract marks from beginning to where you are now, or with found objects, photographs, etc., brought to the class. The instructor will give suggestions in discussion before this week’s class.

Geology of the Scenic Colorado Plateau and the Grand Canyon Region
May 22 – June 5, 2010

For the third year, Dr. Carl Vondra has agreed to lead another geology tour to the Western United States. In 2010, the excursion will focus on the scenery and geology of the high plateaus, canyons, and colorful strata of the Colorado Plateau of western Colorado, southeastern Utah, and northern Arizona. Of particular interest will be the national parks and monuments of the region including Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, and Mesa Verde National Parks.

Unlike earlier trips, this tour is open to all OLLI at ISU members. Since Dr. Vondra will not be offering a spring geology lecture class, anyone can participate. The exact cost of the 15-day excursion is yet to be determined, but should be around $2,300. Included in the cost of the tour are motor coach transportation, lodging, lectures and tour by Dr. Vondra, and entrance fees for national parks and monuments. Most motels will provide a continental breakfast, and the cost of a boxed lunch is included in the tour price; however, evening meals are on your own.

If you are interested in this tour, please indicate on the registration form. As soon as the exact cost of the trip is available, we will contact you.
